Albertans are looking forward to travelling again after several years missing out on sun, cities and adventure.
According to the 2023 Blue Cross® Travel Study, 9 in 10 Canadians want to take a vacation this year and are taking steps to achieve greater peace of mind while on a trip. Albertans, specifically, are eager to explore new places.
As a result of the pause on travelling during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a surge in travel for Albertans in 2022. 48 per cent of Albertans also spent more than they budgeted when travelling throughout the 2022 calendar–making them the highest percentage of people in the entire country to splurge on vacations.
Taking a long overdue trip sounds exciting, especially after the pandemic brought travel to a halt. But as airlines and other travel providers are adjusting to the increased demand, there are several issues and inconveniences leaving sun-seekers stressed. In fact, 58 per cent of Canadians have experienced a travel-related incident, ranging from
- flights being canceled or changed (24 per cent),
- travel baggage being lost (20 per cent),
- travel baggage being damaged (16 per cent), and
- needing medical attention or treatment (13 per cent).
Canadians used to travel without any insurance for these potential concerns. However, it’s now become a very important part of the planning process. 42 per cent of Canadians say they are now more likely to purchase travel insurance than they were in the past, and 58 per cent confirm they would not even consider leaving the province without it.
