National Injury Prevention Day is marked in Canada each year on July 5 to raise awareness about the devastating effects of predictable and preventable injuries. As an advocate for injury prevention, Alberta Blue Cross® is a member of the Preventable coalition and actively participates in injury prevention awareness campaigns throughout the year, addressing topics ranging from drowning and poisoning to helmet safety and falls.

It’s important to live life to the fullest and take part in activities at home, on the road and at play but in doing so, always be aware of the accidents and injuries that can occur. Injury prevention is critical to saving the lives of your loved ones.

Help us prevent serious injury by sharing this information and building awareness of the devastating effects of preventable injury or death.

Did you know?

• Injury is the No. 1 cause of death of Canadians ages 1 to 44,

• Injury costs the Canadian economy $27 billion a year,

• Alberta alone spends an estimated $4 billion annually on injury,

• Preventable injury kills more Canadian children than any single disease and more
youth than all other causes combined,

• Teen drivers die in crashes at a higher rate than any other age group in Canada, and

• 40% of head injuries in children aged 10 to 19 occur during sports.

Canada continues to make progress in injury prevention, but there’s still more work to be done. Please join us in spreading the word this National Injury Prevention Day, and every day.
