If you have an Alberta Blue Cross® Blue Assured® individual health plan, we’ve got great news for you.

Effective March 1, 2020, Alberta Blue Cross® is enhancing the coverage provided through our Blue Assured® plans.

In response to your feedback requesting enhanced prescription drug coverage, we are doubling the Blue Assured® level C optional drug coverage limits from $750 to $1,500 per plan member WITHOUT a rate increase.

Plus, the optional prescription drug coverage module offered under the Blue Assured® plan will no longer terminate at age 65.

This means you can access prescription drug coverage at any age for the duration of your coverage on the plan.

If you have a Blue Assured® plan and want to add or increase its level of optional drug coverage, click here to complete the application form or watch your email or mail for more information.

Recognizing your mental health

To support your mental health, the Individual Assistance Program (IAP) benefit has been added to Blue Assured® extended health benefits level A at no additional cost, with coverage for up to 12 sessions per calendar year.

With this addition to level A, the IAP benefit is now provided through all Blue Assured® plan levels.

The IAP benefit allows you to

  • access a wide range of counselling services,
  • receive confidential and professional short-term support (and referrals when required),
  • meet a broad range of your personal or family needs by phone, in person or online.

For more than 25 years, Alberta Blue Cross® has offered individual health and dental plans designed to meet the diverse needs of the Albertans we serve. As your needs have evolved, we have responded to your feedback by evolving our plans to keep pace with your needs, to complement our provincial health care system, and to place a greater focus on promoting your overall wellness.

Good day, I am confused I have NON-GROUP coverage as well as the Blue Assured plan (I think) I am paying $88.00 dollars for something to ABC.
I did not receive a card for the Assured plan.
How do I find out what coverage I have and what plans I have other than NON-GROUP ?
        Thank you: Michael A Kovacs.

do I fill out any paperwork for the added coverage?

    • Hi Betty,

It depends on what plan level you have. If you were already on plan C, you will not have to fill out any paperwork, it is automatic. If you are on level A or B drug module, you will need to call us at 1-800-661-6995 to upgrade.

I’m on plan C. Some drugs prescribed in 300mg capsules are covered while the same drug in 600mg capsules are not. I find this very odd. Will this situation change with the new extended coverage?

Blue Cross needs to cover Dexcom and Free Style Libre sensors for diabetics.

Blue Cross covers ambulance for diabetics who have insulin reactions but with the Free Style Libre diabetics don’t have insulin reactions. There is a net benefit to Blue Cross as one emergency call for an ambulance due to insulin reaction would cover the cost of the sensors for one year. The economics is there and available for Blue Cross to examine.

  • Bruce Tarbet says:

Hello, just received an email and a letter indicating my Individual Blue Choice Plan was being terminated but Blue Assured Plan was available. After leaving 3 voice mails asking for clarification, I’m trying here. Please have someone call or email me so I can talk with someone on this. Thank you.
